Montrose U/15s B-Grade Elimination Final 27.7.08

Final Score
Montrose: 12.6.78
Donvale: 10.12.72

Commentary
Played the elimination final at Scoresby, which was in fabulous condition. A fairly even 1st quarter, we started well, moving the ball quickly by hand and using it well, they got a couple late and we were 3pts in front. 2nd quarter we really hit our straps, with Don and Jack capitilising on some good work by our midfield, we kicked 5 goals to 2, giving us a handy 21pt lead at 1/2 time.
We knew they would come out fighting, and with some undiciplined efforts by us they edged their way back to be 15 pts down at 3/4 time. If not for some great work by our backline they could have been a lot closer. Last quarter was a real stuggle, with their midfield on top, we had to fight tooth and nail to hold on for a 6 pt win.

A gutsy effort Guys, to fight it out right to the end and hold on for your FIRST finals win as a group. WELL DONE. To win a final is great, but to win a game, when I don't think we played that well and were still be able to come away with a win, shows what a FIGHTING SPIRIT you guys have as a group. We will get on the track this week and improve our attack on the footy and our work at the centre bounces and some of our decision making in our use of the footy. Remember Guys, this is our 1st, of 4 Steps in this finals series. Now we go on take our 2nd Step.

Final Score
Montrose: 11.11.77
Blackburn: 5.10.40

Commentary
In a game where we set ourselves to play 4 Quarters of strong, pressure football, which is what you need to play finals football, we had a very good , allround even performance from the boys. Our ball use and decision making was very good. Our defensive pressure and forward pressure was very good and our onballers became accountable. We probably played 3 and a 1/2 quarters of good footy, which is a big improvement on previous weeks. But, to play finals footy, we need to work up to 4 quarters of the same. Thats what we will be working on at training.

Final Score
Montrose: 9.11.65
U.F.T.G.: 7.8.50

Commentary
We had a lot to play for in this game and so did they, so we knew it would be a tough game. The game was pretty even for most of the day, with Upper Gully holding the lead for most of it. At three quarter time they were 2 goals up on us and we had the job in front of us. Kicking with a slight wind, we knew we couldnt let that do it for us. We needed to improve our use of the ball and be more direct, put more pressure on their onballers and really lift our work rate. We did this in a very good last quarter effort and ran out 15 pt winners. Once again we learn from this that we really need to lift our work rate for 4 quarters to be able to contest with the really good sides.

U/15s B-Grade V G.W.Rovers Round 11.(away). 29.6.08

Final Score
Montrose: 4.3.27
G.W.Rovers: 8.20.68

Commentary
Against the top side at their ground in tough windy conditions, we got off to a good start. We booted 4 goals to 1 with the wind, playing some good running football. We struggled hard against the wind in the 2nd quarter to go in nine points down at 1/2 time. The third 1/4 although not as strong, we kicked with the wind and had opportunies to score, but at times seemed to take the wrong options and not finish off good work. Only 3 pts down at 3/4 time, we knew we had the job ahead of us. Battled on gamely but were overrun by a stronger unit in the last 1/4 to go down.
Once again, we know we can mix it with these teams, but we need to work hard for 4 quarters to have any chance of beating these sides. Once again, a good learning experience.

Final Score
Montrose: 7.13.61
Opposition:0.6.6

Commentary
In very greasy and quite muddy (to what we have been used to) conditions, it was a slow start by our boys, we gradually got on top, getting used to the conditions. We pulled right away , keeping them to only 1 pt in the second half. Once again, a great effort from the backline. Out of their 6 points, we probably rushed 5 of them. A really good all round effort by all and we really saw some good improvement from players who have been down a touch. When you go into a game with only 19 players, its good to be able to achieve what we did !

Final Score
Montrose: 6.8.44
F.T.G.Eagles. 6.15.51

Commentary
In a game (another away game) against one of the top four teams, we started well and had a lot of the play, but were unable to put it on the scoreboard. Our 2nd quarter was terrible as we let them take the initiative and we were second to the ball to let them lead by 4 goals at half time (thanks to some great defence from the backline, we were still within reach).
A good look at ourselves at the break and we came out firing in the 3rd to kick 3 goals in about 5-6 minutes. Another three in the last saw us get to within a kick and end up going down by 7 points.
There was some good positives that came out of the second half in the way we started to run and use each other, switch the footy and our attack at the ball improved.
We probably played some of our best footy of the year in the second half.
BUT ONE HALF WONT WIN US A GAME !
What we need to do guys is play a full game in the same fashion as we did in the 2nd half. Now that we know we can do it, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON WE CANT DO IT FOR 4 QUARTERS !!

Fair Call ??

U/15s B-grade V Heathmont (away) Round 8. 1.6.08

Final Score
Montrose: 7.18.60
Heathmont: 8.9.57

Commentary
We travelled down to Heathmont in a game against the bottom team. Well they certainly didnt play like a bottom team and they got away to a 4 goal lead early. We just had to work our way back into the game with some hard work and hardness at the footy and use the ball better and smarter. We worked our way back to to trail by 11pts at 3/4 time, due to everyone starting to run straight at it and starting to share the ball around. We peppered the goals in the last quarter, still spraying our shots and with the backline really holding up well and the midfield getting on top,we managed to get in front with about 3 minutes to go due to a great mark and very steady shot for goal by Cam Churchil. We held on to win. Some really encouraging displays from Jack Chisolm, Timmy Christou, Ben Dinardo stand us in good stead for the future. Really, the whole team responded when they had to, which is what good teams should do.

What we did learn today was not to underestimate any team in the future and show respect to teams we play. We dug ourselves out of a hole, which is a good sign, but we must learn to play with the same committment and desperation we did in the 2nd half, ALL OF THE TIME.

U/15s -B Grade. Vs G.W. Rovers, Round 7.2008 (home)

Final Score
Montrose: 6.4.40
G.W.R : 13.11.89

Commentary
Playing against probably the best team in the competition, we allowed them to slip away to a 5 goal to zip lead in the 1st 15 mins. We re-grouped to get on the board and worked our way ,to get "back in the game"and pretty much held our own for the rest of the game. We were certainly very competitive and for long periods had most of the play, only to waste our opportunities by poor disposals." Thats what we learn from this" and get back on the track and try to improve what we are doing wrong. Keep the heads up guys, if they are the best, then we learn from what they do and improve what we do.

U/15s- B Grade V Blackburn Round 6, 2008 (away)

Final Score
Montrose: 5-14-44
Blackburn: 12-10-82

Commentary
In an important game for us, against one of the top sides and only 19 players, we started well. A very even 1st quarter saw not much between the two sides. We got on top in the second quarter with some very good running football and quick movement of the ball. Failing to really capitalise on our opportunities really cost us and we went to the break 4pts in front, when it should have been 4 goals. Blackburn came out firing in the 3rd to kick 6 goals to zip, they were 1st to the ball and deserved their lead. Last quarter we fought on well, not giving up, which was a good sign to play the game right out.
It is a good learning curve for us after a good start to the year. We cannot afford to give good teams a sniff because they will come back at you. We must make the most of our oppotunities when they arise. We will re-group on the track this week and improve on our performance.

Final Score
Montrose: 14-6-90
Donvale: 8-14-62
Commentary
Back at home today against Donvale, we knew it would be a tough game. A fairly even 1st half,we went to half time knowing that we had to put the pressure right on in the 3rd quarter. We put it to the boys that this was probably the most important quarter of football for the year so far. They responded well, kicking 5 -6 goals for the quarter, giving us a handy 41pt lead at the going into the last quarter against the wind. They came back at us with all they had, but we responded well for the last half of the quarter - like good teams do, to have a 28pt win. We go into next week with a bye and then set ourselves for Blackburn.

2008 U/15s B Round 3 V Knox (away)

Final Score
Montrose: 15-8-98
Knox: 6.13.49

Commentary
Today we travelled down to Knox against a team that came down from A-Grade.The boys put in a strong performance to have a comfortable win. The boys are starting to team together well with some good patches of running, play-on footy. Strong performance by "The Don" up forward gave us a great target to kick to. Good drive from Nuci, Gars, Tommy and Asti, kept pumping it forward to maintain the pressure. The Backline, led by Daimo, held up well and are starting to Gel together. We did let them in for a few late " junk-time" goals which we cannot afford to do against the better teams. We can't afford to just be happy where we are at, lets keep working on the track on our deficiancies and keep up the improvement and then we can go a lot further this year ! Well done Guys.

2008 U/15s B Round 2 V Upper F.T.G.

Final Score
Montrose: 10-13-73
U.F.T.G.: 9-5-59

Commentary

We travelled down to Upper Gully looking to capitalise on last weeks effort. Losing our Captain was a big blow to the side. So we made a pact to do it for Asti and all of us "step up" to fill the hole. We started off well with a quick goal, but then fell back into their style of stop start play. Turning into a very scrappy game, we seemed to lose our run and "want" for the footy. If not for our backline, led by Daimo and Harro, we could have been in big trouble. We were down at half time and in the rooms we spoke about how we could improve our attack on the footy. We committed ourselves to put our bodies in and head over the footy and win the"hard ball "and led by some great deeds of courage from Jack. G , Harro and Nick we all lifted and started to all put our bodies in. With some great drive from Nuci and Sam and our "mosquito fleet", Smithy, Simmo, Jarryd and Nick we started to get on top. Our forwards started working harder and "locking it in" our forward line, much to our backline's delight! All of a sudden it was like a disease, we all caught it and did our little bit to help out to a hard fought 14 pt win, in what turned out to be a good team effort !

Scoresby : 6-8-44

Commentary
!st of all, what a way to start the year than with one of the boys playing his 100th game. Congratulations to Josh Patterson on his 100th game for the club, well done mate. To play 100 games of any sport is a great achievement, it shows great dedication and commitment to your love of the sport and I hope you go on to play another 100 for the Montrose Football club.

A very good start to the year by the boys, we made a commitment before this game to unite, all as one and get off to a good start. We did that with some good application of our game plans and a very even performance all round. We will look to continue on from this base we have set up and put in another strong performance next week.
